All eyes are on the 20-year-old lad Achinta Sheuli from India as he bagged the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games. Achinta Sheuli created a set of new records in the men’s 73 kg weightlifting category. This includes a new record in snatch, lifting 143 kg and 170 kg in clean and jerk. With an overall lift of 313 kg, he took the lead over Erry Hidayat Muhammad (303kg) of Malaysia, who finished second and Shad Darsigny of Canada (298kg) took the bronze medal.
Before Achinta Sheuli, Mirabai Chahnu in women’s 49 kg and Jeremy Lalrinnunga in men’s 67 kg had brought gold medals in the weightlifting category from India.
With Achinta’s gold medal, India is now in the fifth spot in the standings with six gold medals in Birmingham.

Coming from a remote village named Deulpur in West Bengal, Achinta Sheuli rose among the best young weightlifters in the country. He has bagged international medals at the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships 2019 and 2021. Furthermore, he won a silver medal in the men’s category of 73 kg at the World Junior Championships. After all the national records, he was nominated for the Indian weightlifting squad for Birmingham 2022 among 12 other members.
With that, he smashed the record of the Commonwealth Games along with upgrading his personal record.

Achinta Sheuli’s snatch attempt began with the 137 kg lift which fixed his position straight at the top of the list in the 73 kg category. Following that, he lifted an impressive 140 kg in the second attempt. However, he improved it further with the lift of 143 kg in his third attempt which created a new snatch record in the Commonwealth Games. Achinta is now an inspiration among all the aspiring weightlifters in the country.
