During 2020, India reported a total of 2533 cases of rape across metropolitan cities with Delhi accounting for the maximum 967 which is 38%, followed by 409 in Jaipur (16%) and 322 in Mumbai (12%).

Maharashtra Chief minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday held a meeting with officials from the administration and the police department in the wake of the sexual assault and subsequent death of a woman in Mumbai’s Sakinaka area and directed the police to identify areas unsafe for women in the city and to increase patrolling in those regions. Mr. Thackeray directed that the second phase of the CCTV installation be speeded up as they are vital to solving a crime. He said “Nirbhaya squad with the inclusion of women police officers should be formed in every police station which will patrol the area during day and night” meeting attended by Chief Secretary, additional CS, DGP, Mumbai Police Commissioner and Joint Police Commissioners. Directions have also been issued to locate women living alone on the roadside and relocate them to safer places and keep a close eye on people with a history of allegations of sexual assault on women.

In the early hours of 10th September, a tempo driver named Mohan Chauhan 32-year-old Dalit woman. The woman was found severely injured bleeding in the tempo and was immediately hospitalized after an FIR was registered. CCTV footage recovered by the police found that the accused had raped and assaulted the woman with an unidentified object. He was then booked for rape and after she yielded to her injuries a murder charge was added to the FIR.
A 2020 report by NGO Praja revealed that Mumbai recorded some of the highest numbers in rape cases, sexual assault cases in public transport, and sexual crimes against minors, Delhi ranked second after.
