Instead of concentrating on policy-level recommendations, NITI Ayog should concentrate on the implementation aspect, such as process improvements, and inform the government of its shortcomings.
The Union government announced NITI (National Institute for changing India) on January 1st, 2015. The Planning Commission of India will be replaced by NITI Aayog, according to a resolution voted by the parliament.
In contrast to Niti Aayog, the Planning Commission of India had two major responsibilities: first, to implement the five-year plan; and second, to distribute funding to the states. Now, the finance ministry is responsible for allocating cash. The government’s think tank and advisory body are called Niti Aayog.
All of the chief ministers of the states and the governors of the union territories are members of the Niti Aayog’s council.
Why is it a success?
NITI Aayog has been active over the last two years in a variety of fields, including the development of digital payments and changes in the agricultural, educational, and rail industries.
The task force of chief ministers has been established by Niti Aayog to concentrate on poverty alleviation and agricultural development.
Through its Atal Innovation mission, it has contributed to the development of an innovation and entrepreneurial ecosystem in the nation.
It gave the committee more authority to work on creative ideas and was crucial to the opening of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad high-speed rail route.
The planning commission did not have the responsibility for the new function of Niti Aayog, which is the economic aspect of national security.
What are the loopholes?
To make Niti Aayog more useful, additional authority was granted to it, however giving a single body too many powers is bad for governance.
NITI Aayog was established to promote public engagement and involvement in economic policy, however, it has accomplished neither.
Its task was to monitor state demands and meet those needs, something it hasn’t been able to do to this point.
Like the National Development Council, the governing council is made up of the chief ministers of each state and the administrators of the union territories.
It lacks the authority to assess how well the various government programs are working.
