All countries are susceptible to the consequences of climate change, according to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
The United Nations Basis Convention on Climate Change is the framework for the biennial United Nations Climate Change Conferences (UNFCCC). These are the 198 countries’ official gatherings (Conference of the Parties, COP). At these summits, nations evaluate their success in combating climate change and set binding agreements to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
COP was established to make the critical decisions required to combat climate change goals.
Every year, the United Nations holds a conference on climate change to propose new ideas and consider existing ones. As a result, it raises people’s awareness of climate change.
Egypt hosted COP 27 in November 2022.
The achievements of the conference
The Bali Roadmap, which was adopted in 2007, superseded the 1997 Kyoto Protocol, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in industrialized nations. All nations are included, not only those that are becoming more industrialized.
Under the auspices of COP15, it was jointly determined to keep the increase in global temperature to below 2 degrees, and wealthier countries also committed to funding developing countries’ long-term climate change goals.
Another accomplishment of COP conferences is the establishment of the Green Climate Fund. The fund uses voluntary contributions from wealthy nations to fund projects that assist low- and middle-income countries in reducing emissions and preparing for climate change.
The failures
There was no firm commitment to cut methane emissions and phase out all fossil fuels.
Additionally, there was no explicit push to increase the use of renewable energy.
Nations continue to support the 1.5 degree Celsius objective, but not enough is being done to support it. We are no longer on track to meet the 1.5-degree limit since all the actions that may have had a significant influence have been stopped.
Although there is a rapidly shrinking window of opportunity to fulfill the goal of keeping global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees Celsius or less, mitigation, or cutting emissions, received little attention during COP27.
