India is turning into an electoral autocracy

This march, an independent research institute based at the University of Gothenburg named The V-Dem Institute, has said that India is no longer an electoral democracy. The Sweden based institute has classified our country as an electoral autocracy instead. It is not unknown to any reasonable person that democratic freedom hugely compromised, since the Bharatiya Janata Party has come into power in 2014. The Autocratisation of a nation follows a similar diagram in every case. And the Modi ruled Central Government has gradually checked most of the boxes till now.

It starts with the ruling Government attacking the freedom of media. The media considered the fourth pillar of a democracy. But the trend of some media houses shamelessly bootlicking and pandering to the BJP is painfully visible. They don’t even try to hide it anymore. Instead of upholding the facts, media houses like Republic Tv, Zee News and many other networks are busy spreading false propaganda, Distracting people from the real issues India is currently facing.

The BJP actively tries to silence any criticism against their shameless exploitation of the people of India. Anybody who speaks up, labelled as anti-nationals and even booked under sedition charges. Democracy needs people to dissent. The Constitution of India guarantees the right to freedom in Article 19. Which includes the freedom of speech and expression, as one of its six freedoms. But the Central Government, like their many other unconstitutional actions, disrespects any different opinion and spreads false information.

BJP and it’s Dictatorship

The very common thing among the followers of BJP . That they believe and actively circulate false information to distract the population. Because let’s be honest here. A party whose sole agenda is demolishing democracy and establishing a dictatorship, you need blind faith. From the CAA protests to the farmer’s protests, activists and critics disrespected, charged with UAPA and mercilessly incarcerated. Father Stan Swamy died waiting for his bail plea to be granted. The 84-year-old activist with cerebral palsy was not even provided with a straw to drink. Safoora Zargar incarcerated when she was three months pregnant. She was vilified on social media by the BJP puppets. Her fault was to speak up against the dictatorship of Modi. The farmers who are protesting against the three farmer’s bills, called Khalistanis, the very farmers who provide the food on our plates.

Perhaps the most severe attack the BJP inflicted on India’s democracy was the polarisation of the people. The rampant fuelled communism in the country. Shamelessly talked about making India a ‘Hindu Nation’, even though secularism is an ingrained part of our Constitution. And between all this deliberate chaos, they are sucking the life out of the largest democracy in the world. So much so that India is not being classified as a democracy anymore.

The typical pattern of autocratisation follows a gradual deterioration. Where freedom of the intellectuals and activists ,curtailed first and then all the freedom of the people taken. The BJP needs to be removed from authority to restore the true spirit of India once again. We have to remember that they will come after all of us sooner or later. Whether you are a ‘kattar hindu’ or a critic.
