India has been actively trying for a permanent seat in the United Nations Security Council. Gaining a permanent seat in the UN Security Council would raise India’s position to par with US, UK, France, Russia and China. This would aid the country in raising a critical voice in all global problems. India deems this an important step in becoming an important part of the world diplomatic sphere. Furthermore, India will get the special right to veto which will further benefit the country in various ways. However, the question arises if India is ready to become a permanent member.
Why should the Security Council incorporate new members?
Apart from India, several other nations urge to become permanent members of the UN Security Council. The present UN reflects the power that existed after World War II. Since then 70 years have passed and the present structure of the world has changed a lot.
Now, permanent members represent only 40 per cent of the world’s population. The permanent members have kept out the emerging world powers. The criteria for becoming a permanent member are satisfied by several countries in the world. Hence it is not valid and should be changed over time.
Hence, incorporating new countries is extremely important in the Security Council.
Will it benefit India?
India is a developing country. Moreover, India doesn’t have a very good history in its political attempts due to the United Nations. To become a permanent member, we must leverage a sheer heft of our political and economic weight. Only then can we become a part of all multinational conversations. The world has started to look at India as a prospective country. Its reputation is a lot better than it used to be. Hence, India has a chance to become a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council. However, it will take its own time, while India can move forward with its development procedures.
